Stretching along the coast around Marseille, from the Italian border to Spain, the "Südwall" (Mediterranean Wall) was built during the Second World War. It served the German Wehrmacht, which occupied the territory since 1943, as a defense post against the Allied forces. Even today, the remains of bunkers, fortifications and shooting ranges can be found in the city of Marseille, along the Calanques and its white cliffs and on the islands of Frioul. For this series, Margret Hoppe photographs these bunkers which, by their materiality and the color of the cement, almost seem to integrate into the rocky landscape of the coastline. The series of photographs of the geographical Südwall and its architectural traces in the landscape is completed by another research on the traces of the history of German intellectuals exiled in Marseille, such as Lion Feuchtwanger, Bertolt Brecht, and Thomas Mann.
