Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Washington lamp
Born in 1948, Jean-Michel Wilmotte is one of the most personal and creative designers of the 80s. A man of communication, an enemy of overly static theories, he displays his credo: materials, nothing but materials. Metal, glass, granite, which he mistreats until they "vibrate". Then the classic beauty of a balance is established.
He is a man on the move, at once a designer, interior architect, furniture editor, capable of designing and editing furniture - the "Flag" console, the "Washington" desk, or the new chair at the Palais Royal which have extended his reputation in France and abroad - as well as creating or recreating spaces, Canal +, the Hôtel de Ville, the museum and opera of Nîmes, the Flammarion and Albin Michel bookstores or François Mitterrand's room at the Elysée.
He began his studies in architecture in Saint-Luc, Belgium, before moving to Paris, where he enrolled at the Camondo school. He graduated in 1973 and created his own architectural firm, Wilmotte & Associés, in 1975. The firm is structured around two main entities - the architectural practice and the design studio, which operate simultaneously.
Passionate about art and a collector, he draws inspiration from his encounters and discoveries, and is constantly developing and diversifying his expertise, in France and abroad, where he is recognized for his approach to detail and the use of quality materials.
Designed for the French Embassy in Washington in 1983, the "Washington" lamp is one of the great classics of design.
Very elegant, it is made of black lacquered metal. The adjustable reflector is fixed on a "jack" in order to diffuse targeted lighting.
